This weekend the Triabetes team will compete in Ironman Arizona. I met the team in March during a training camp in Tucson. This is a great bunch of athletes! I’m really excited for all of them and I wish them the best. I just can’t imagine getting through an entire Ironman. Sure, I run long distances … okay, insanely long distances … but, an Ironman is a tough deal. There is the swimming, cycling, and running combined. Plus, each event is really long; I mean, come on, the running on the end is a full marathon! Holy crap Batman! So, good luck to the Triabetes team!
After my back trouble from the infamous mattress incident, I’m running a whopping big 15 or 16 miles for a “long” run. But, then yesterday afternoon I went out and ran my rolling 10 mile trail loop (I call it LO10 for Lake Orange 10) and ran 67:25 without feeling too bad at all. I have no idea where that came from. I haven’t run anything fast since I hurt my back, haven’t done a long run since then, and have been busy enough lately that my weekly mileage is pretty low for me.
What I have been doing consistently, though, is core work and weights, stretching, and form/cadence drills. So, there you have it - the biggest bang for your buck is in the basics, the fundamentals. The few times that I was injured when I was racing the roads heavily, I was usually able to maintain pretty decent fitness by focusing on those fundamentals and hitting the elliptical for more cadence work and overall aerobic conditioning. I actually still get on the elliptical about 5 days/week.
So, this is short … mainly just wanted to wish Triabetes good luck!

I did the Ragnar Relay Del Sol with a bunch of the Triabetes gang back in Feb. Great group of folks and a fantastic organization!
Just wanted to add my wishes of Good Luck too!
Thanks, Missy!
Glad you’re recovering so well from the back thing.
